Running, walking and lighting your way to safety after dark

Darkness falls with deceptive speed as autumn absorbs the summer days. You may start out on a walk or run before the sun sets but return home after dark.

Staying safe as a pedestrian is not always easy, especially after nightfall. Here are four suggestions that should help.

1. Wearing light

Because you run or walk against traffic, wearing a headlamp is a great idea after dark. Not only does it make you much more visible, but it also lights the path in front of you. You want a headlamp that is easily adjustable and light enough in weight so that you do not feel top heavy. Some also feature a rear blinker. You can also find lights for other parts of your body; for example, lights to wear around your neck or even to wrap around your knuckles.

2. Using reflective strips

Most sneakers, running shoes and running jackets have spots or strips of reflective material, but more is better. You can find reflective running belts, ankle or wrist cuffs as well as reflective vests. If you need to save money, you can buy reflective tape to add to the back of your jacket or vest.

3. Opting for color

Never wear dark colors while out walking or jogging after dark. Wear neon colors such as yellow, orange or lime. At the very least, wear a plain white shirt that makes you stand out in a driver’s headlights.

4. Choosing the best route

There is no question that pedestrians are vulnerable to injury. In 2015, 129,000 pedestrians received treatment for injuries resulting from traffic crashes, and in 2016, 5,987 pedestrians died in such accidents. Most pedestrian fatalities occur in urban locations at night, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Now that it gets darker earlier, perhaps you should consider changing your route to one where there are fewer cars to worry about. Be careful out there, and consider a few bright innovations designed to light your way to safety.
