Now that winter is in full swing, you are probably ready to bring your snowmobile out for a spin. Snowmobiling is one of the most fun winter activities Minnesotans enjoy. While zipping through the snow is exhilarating, it can also be dangerous

Even if you have a lot of snowmobiling experience, it is vital to prepare yourself and pay attention to safety tips. Here are some guidelines from the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association.

1. Maintain your snowmobile

You need your vehicle to be in proper shape if you want to stay safe. The best rule of thumb is to read the owner’s manual and follow the guidelines in it. You should conduct a comprehensive check of your vehicle before every outing, including the throttle, brakes, track, idler wheels, slide rail, skis, wear bars and lights. If you notice any significant issues, get them fixed by a certified mechanic.

2. Bring a friend

One of the best things you can do for your safety and wellbeing is bringing someone along with you on your snowmobiling adventure. Whether it is one close friend or family member or a big group, there is safety in numbers. When you have someone with you, he or she can assist you if you get into an accident.

3. Focus on communication

Clear communication is vital before and during your trip. Discuss your plans with a friend or family member so somebody knows where you are and when you should be back. This person can help if you do not return from your trip on time. Also, on the trails, make sure you always use hand signals to tell other snowmobilers where you are going.

Having fun may be your goal when going on a snowmobiling trip, but it is crucial to prioritize your safety. Being ready and making the right decisions will help you have a safe and good time in the snow.
