Summer driving dangers you should be on guard against

Summer is here, and the roads are overflowing with motorists. As you get ready to travel to work or vacation this season, take some time to learn about some common driving dangers you may encounter. Even if you are normally a defensive driver, you have a higher risk of being in a car accident during the summer months.

Here is a brief overview of driving hazards that can put you in harm's way.

Drunk motorists

The days are long and more people are spending more time outside, going to parties and drinking alcohol. As a result, there are more intoxicated drivers on the streets. You can avoid these individuals by paying close attention to their driving behaviors when you are near them. If you see them swerving, driving too slow or fast, tailgating, driving down the streets in the wrong direction, or doing some other reckless action, you should stay far away from them to avoid getting in a car accident with a drunk motorist. You should also pull over to somewhere safe so you can call the local authorities to report them.

Reckless drivers

The chances of you encountering a reckless driver are higher now that there is more traffic. Because reckless driving situations can escalate quickly, it is imperative for you to know when you are near an aggressive driver. Reckless motorists often tailgate, speed, make sudden stops and commit serious driving errors that put others in danger. Many of them also try to intimidate other motorists to entice them into altercations which can become deadly. Never engage an angry or reckless motorist. Avoid making eye contact, obscene gestures and yelling at them. If you see a reckless driver, report them to the authorities.

Road construction zones

There are many road construction projects going on in the area. You may have to take detours and experience an increase in travel time and higher traffic volumes when you take to the roads. You should check your routes before you get behind the steering wheel. If there are detours, make sure you are familiar with them before traveling. You should also anticipate traffic delays and plan your route accordingly.

Many car accidents do not have to occur. Even though many of them are caused by other motorists, you can limit your chances of getting in one by paying attention to your surroundings and other motorists, using safe driving behaviors, and reporting suspicious drivers.
