A waste management worker died on December 13th after being struck by a garbage truck, the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened when the garbage truck made a stop in Cannon Falls Township on 90th Avenue Way. The driver had put the truck in neutral and engaged the air brakes before the passenger and the driver got out of the truck. The driver then went to the rear of the truck to pick up a garbage can with the passenger doing the same in the front of the truck.

While the passenger was picking up the can, the driver noticed that the garbage truck started rolling forward, striking his co-worker before he could yell a warning. The truck had rolled 82 feet before it struck the victim, rolling over him, according to the Sheriff’s report.

The victim, 35-year-old Mark Isaacson of Faribault, Minnesota, was later pronounced dead at the Cannon Falls Hospital.

The Minnesota State Patrol is expected to do an accident reconstruction and also perform an inspection on the vehicle. The patrol will look for possible brake failure and ensure that the driver, 35-year-old Jonathan Bell of Inver Grove Heights, was in compliance with laws.

According to the United State’s Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the number of work-related deaths in the country totaled 4,600 a year ago. That’s an average of 13 deaths per day.
