A Minneapolis man is facing careless driving charges after a car accident that resulted in the wrongful death of a Lakeville woman.

Bashir Ahmed Abdulahi, 24, faces a single count of careless driving in the crash that occurred in September at the Hwy 149 and Hwy 55 intersection. If Abdulahi is convicted, he could face a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail.

The victim, 68-year-old Sandra S. Brodin, was in the passenger seat of a Mini Cooper that was making a left turn onto Hwy 149 from Hwy 55 when Abdulahi’s Dodge Caravan broadsided her as it was traveling west, according to the report filed by the Minnesota State Patrol.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, Dale Brodin, 69, sustained minor injuries in the accident, while Abdulahi sustained no injuries. It was later found by investigators that Brodin’s car was turning left while there was a green left turn arrow on the traffic light.

Sandra Brodin was transported to Regions Hospital where her injuries resulted in her death.

Brodin’s death makes the 10th fatality in a careless driving case in Dakota County since 2006 that did not involve drugs or alcohol. It has been proposed that there be a law that would increase the penalties in careless driving cases. So far, the passing of the proposed legislation has been unsuccessful.
